Documentary photography usually refers to a popular form of photography used to chronicle events or environments both significant and relevant to history and historical events as well as everyday life. It is typically covered in professional photojournalism, or real life reportage, but it may also be an amateur, artistic, or academic pursuit.



Documentary photography vs. photojournalism

Documentary photography generally relates to longer term projects with a more complex story line, while photojournalism concerns more breaking news stories. The two approaches often overlap. Some theorists argue that photojournalism, with its close relationship to the news media, is influenced to a greater degree than documentary photography by the need to entertain audiences and market products.

3 children among four dead in Michigan shooting Last Monday, Feb. 18, 2019, near Cedar Springs, Mich. The three children were elementary school-aged and younger. Besides them, a woman was also killed. Authorities in the US say three children and a woman were found dead of apparent gunshot wounds at a home in western Michigan. Kent County Sheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young says authorities responded Monday to a property near Cedar Springs, a community about 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of Grand Rapids. She says someone discovered the bodies and called 911. LaJoye-Young said the three children were elementary school-aged and younger but declined to provide further information about the victims' relationships to one another.
